Use Responsive Learning to Effectively Reach More Learners

Domenic Caloia

The challenge for online trainers is how best to reach a mix of learning styles and learning types. Classroom instructors have the advantage of being able to interact with learners and adapt their delivery to provide the optimum learning experience for each individual. Responsive learning addresses that problem by letting the learner choose the delivery style and method they want, and seamlessly switch modes at any time. Note that responsive learning refers to the learning experience responding to user needs and should not be confused with responsive course design that adapts layout to the user’s device.

Lectora Inspire has the power to deliver a fluid learning experience where users determine how they receive content. This is ideally suited to delivering content to a variety of learning styles. Since a learner’s style changes as they progress, the learner can shift into a different style at any time to maximize their learning.

Responsive learning also does a great job with learners at different levels. For example, a company may require all employees to take compliance training. That means new hires who may not understand corporate terminology, as well as seasoned employees and top executives must all take the same course. This would normally be a training nightmare. Responsive learning would allow the executive a fast pass through the course while other learners could select the appropriate level of detail.

In order to accomplish this, designers and developers need to layer content, and then add dynamic links for users to access varying levels of content on any page of the course. In this session, we will demonstrate shortcuts to layered content and explain the Lectora user actions, variables, and scripting needed to make it work. Lectora’s ability to dynamically access any page in the course is the key to responsive design.

Although this presentation uses some custom JavaScript, programming experience is not required. This session will discuss several apps.
