Growing up in Southern Indiana and fascinated by science and mathematics, I dreamed of getting to the “big city” and working on something important, amazing. I finished an honors degree program in physics, mathematics and computer science at Purdue University with minors in British literature and neuroscience. Two years on a small software team doing UI development in Smalltalk and DB backend work in C++ gave me the chance to live and work in Chicago, fulfilling that dream. I left for the remarkable world of the Southwest where hiking and camping were matched in intensity by my doctoral research the emergence of cognitive structure in complex robotic control systems as part of the PhD program in Artificial Intelligence. That led to thirteen years as a professor of computer science at San Diego State University, teaching languages and compilers, artificial intelligence and theory and practice of human computer interfaces. One interesting project there, based on my AI architecture “Starcat” was a set of distributed intelligent sensors for battlefield awareness. I returned home to be near my family and eventually bought a house and eagerly accepted the position of software support specialist here at Trivantis.
